Transforming technical experts into business leaders

For many organisations, it is mission critical to be able to move technical experts seamlessly into the business arena and be successful in leadership roles. However, this transition is often poorly handled and crucial talent can be lost from the top table.

Technical Experts

Technical experts are highly analytical, intelligent, curious and challenging - all qualities that make for excellent business leaders.  However, the point at which they move from being The Expert, to wearing both the hats of Expert and Manager can be tricky because there is a need for the expert to build several new skills sets, all while still juggling the day job! Managing and supporting this transition, to ensure that it goes smoothly, is a key way for businesses to retain and make the most of their expert talent and ensure that their expertise reaches and is heard at the top table.

Our Approach

Ideally we work with the experts just before the transition takes place, or at least while it is relatively new.  Caroline can work 1:1 or with groups depending on the organisational needs, usually with monthly meetings spread over 6-12 months. We may also include training courses on management soft skills to support the transition.
Our approach is to make sure that the Expert harnesses their natural skill set. They both engage with the business side of the role and enjoy the challenge of developing strategies to find a style of leadership that 'fits' for them and their teams.  Working with those who have made the transition themselves builds a good rapport and confidence in this process, which in turn maximises the effectiveness of the coaching and training.

"When I talk to technical business leaders about how they made the transition from technical to business their frustrations with the process are tangible - why are we failing to engage successfully with this talent pool?”
