The Capital Request
This is a fast-paced workshop that will allow attendees to use their numerical and analytical skills to discuss and debate factors they will need to consider when making a capital request.
The attendees will work their way through a case study. They are put in the position of being a technical manager who has four potential new pieces of equipment that they would like to purchase and who needs to decide which one to propose to the senior team. The options will raise familiar issues for technical managers, such as justifying an investment to increase efficiency, introducing more automation, replacing old and failing equipment or buying equipment that would increase the range of work that can be done within the team . In order to view the options from a strategic viewpoint, they will carry out a top level financial analysis, creating a P&L for each option (bring calculators/laptops!), and then use this analysis to select and communicate an appropriate business rationale for the capital request.
The workshop will also focus on discussing and considering both the operational and the much broader strategic aspects of investment decisions, from the implications for HR (automation) to matching the proposal with the company's overall investment strategy, considering risk vs benefit. It will also require explaining their rationale in business language, clearly 'joining the dots' where needed, and also ensuring that they are providing the level of information and analysis that the FD and CEO would expect to see on a capital request.
